Siltback are massive marsh grazers whose overlapping keratin plates trap wet silt across the body. The mud layer regulates skin temperature, discourages biting insects, and makes adults exceptionally difficult to dislodge.
What Keepers notice
By wallowing and climbing out along the same banks, Siltback rebuild low islands that nesting birds use during flood season. Drainage projects can erase generations of these raised resting sites in a single year.
