The Living Codex archivist who would rather label uncertainty than make it disappear.
Aster Wynn became Index because people kept asking them where things were and because they almost always knew. The name stuck when visitors began asking for Index before they knew the archivist had another name.
An archivist who leaves arguments visible
Index is curious, careful, and comfortable saying that the archive does not know. They fought to keep disputed oral histories publicly accessible with visible provenance instead of moving them into cabinets where uncertainty could be mistaken for embarrassment.
Field notes before shelves
Before Registry House, Index catalogued oral histories along the drowned south roads. They still write temporary shelf labels by hand, tuck them into a brass collar clip, and come home with charcoal on their fingertips more often than ink.
The repeated sentence
Three unrelated folklore records contain the same sentence in handwriting older than any of the source collections. Index has marked all three as disputed and quietly requested the originals.
